Clean and well-maintained vehicles are a door opener to satisfied passengers. Regular cleaning is therefore one of the standard routines in the maintenance and care of rail vehicles. This is because the appearance of the vehicle fleet is a decisive factor when it comes to shaping the perception of quality. That is why also private rail companies attach great importance to the cleanliness of their vehicles, especially in local passenger transport.
Challenge
You don’t just drive a train through a train washing system. In addition to the demanding scheduling and the expensive downtime for maintenance cleaning, high costs are incurred for personnel and cleaning agents. Thus, the time required for the work process as well as the quality and quantity of the cleaning agent used have a decisive influence on the total operating costs for cleaning.
Analysis
The private rail company in question operates a total of three train washing systems at various locations for the purpose of cleaning to restore functionality.
The cleaning result from all three with the agents used proved to be inconsistent and time-consuming re-cleaning was frequently required. In addition, there were constant problems with the water treatment, which sometimes led to interruptions through to the failure of the entire system.

Caramba identified a suboptimal selection of cleaning agents with some negative interactions and calculation errors in the dosage of the active ingredients as the cause of the susceptibility of the system to failure.
In close cooperation with the wash personnel, purchasing, workshop foremen and quality management, Caramba revised the entire process chain in the car wash.

The cleaning result was significantly improved by the fundamental readjustment of the system and optimisation of the process chain. By switching to Caramba high-efficiency cleaning agents, the consumption of cleaning agents and, at the same time, the time required for cleaning has dropped significantly.
The annual saving effect was estimated by the operator to be in the mid five-digit range.
