Issue
Tanks need to be cleaned. This applies particularly to the transport of food. Ultimately, safety, cleanliness and hygiene are a priority here. However, this results in significant maintenance costs in this area – for one thing due to high personnel costs for tank cleaning but also due to the downtime and associated loss of use in the vehicle fleet.
Challenge
The transport of foodstuffs is subject to the strictest conditions. The regulations range from the materials approved for the construction of such tanks to the types and designs, through to maintenance and care. Last but not least, even the cleaning agents must comply with the standards of the NFS. Thus, the selection of highly effective cleaning agents is severely limited for approval reasons. Since the cleaning of food tanks must be carried out with due care, the costs depend heavily on the effectiveness of the cleaning agents used.
Analysis
Occasionally, there were complaints about the cleaning result at the company MTR-Food in Mannheim. This affected in particular the rubber hoses, which are used for filling and draining the tanks. Black spots were increasingly found on the inner surface of the hose jacket. The replacement costs were up to €1,500 per complaint depending on the length and design of the foodstuff hoses.
Best advice
The discolouration was caused by a strongly alkaline cleaning agent. This was replaced by Caramba TG 22. The weakly alkaline specialised cleaner proved to be effective especially with regard to the sensitive hoses and seals and was, at the same time, a gentle alternative for the material.
Caramba effect
After switching to the slightly alkaline specialised cleaner Caramba TG 22, the complaint rate for tank interior cleaning dropped to almost zero. The related provisions for customer compensation were reduced by the same amount. In addition, the downtime for cleaning was reduced. Plus, an important contribution to greater occupational safety was made by not using strongly alkaline agents.
